I did that once -- with a stuffed alpaca. (i.e. a stuffed animal version of an alpaca, not a real one stuffed.) I misheard what the guy said to me -- it was in fact a gift he had just received -- and so I blithely walked down the street with it for a while until I realized it was in fact not meant for me.
