Liberal media bias
Did anybody watch Bush's address last night? The Washington Post makes it sound a bit ominous:
Surrounding himself with uniformed soldiers and standing before a backdrop emblazoned with American flags, Bush portrayed the two-year-old war in Iraq as the logical extension of a larger struggle that began when hijackers slammed passenger jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001...The military was none too pleased either:
Notably, at a time when military recruiting has suffered, Bush made his first direct pitch to young Americans to enlist.
The sole supportive interruption followed a sequence in which Bush built to the line, "We will stay in the fight until the fight is won." NBC's Kelly O'Connell, reporting from Fort Bragg, told Williams afterward that the applause appeared to have been "triggered by members of the president's advance team" and that once they began clapping, the soldiers joined in...
Two soldiers' wives interviewed said they were prepared for the war to last 10 or 12 years...

This can't go wrong
SCIENTISTS have created eerie zombie dogs, reanimating the canines after several hours of clinical death in attempts to develop suspended animation for humans.
Pittsburgh's Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject's veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution... three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.
...
Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre.

So here's your links for the day:
Alpha Shade, one of the highest production-valued webcomics i've ever seen...and so far, the story seems decent.
Also,
This is supposedly a leak of the first print ad for the new Nintendo, codenamed "Revolution".
Post-script: What is everyone doing for the 4th?

there is a type of virus, i've heard, that gets on your computer, nestles in somewhere near your address book, and starts pumping out spam-ish type messages from your email account to everyone it can find in your system. true? false? type? redstar, which has like four registered accounts, is hitting me up with bullshit from 'webmaster' and 'accounts' at redstarkgb.com. i assume this means one of those four computers got shit on it, but i'm not sure where to start (besides rimming feez and klemis).

The inside scoop
Woah
Snopes manages to blow my mind twice in one post:
- While there are many CPR dummies or mannequins on the market, the face of the one most widely used was modeled on that of an anonymous young woman whose body was fished from the Seine around the turn of the
20th century. It was believed she had taken her own life, but since she was never identified, no details of her life were known and the events leading to her demise remain a mystery.
- Many a student of basic CPR has been taught to check if a patient is unconscious by gently shaking the doll and calling, "Annie, Annie, are you OK?"

My nerd alarm just went off
"Concentrate on the moment. Feel, don't think. Trust your instincts," says a Jedi to the young Anakin in Episode I, immediately before a pod race in which Anakin is likely to get killed. It is distinctly odd counsel coming from a member of the Jedi order, the geekiest people in the universe: they have beards and ponytails, they dress in army blankets, they are expert fighter pilots, they build their own laser swords from scratch.

David Sedaris is one of my literary heroes
As I turned to my puzzle, Becky reached for a paperback novel, the kind with an embossed cover. I strained to see what the title was, and she jerked it closer to the window. Strange how that happens, how you can feel someone’s eyes on your book or magazine as surely as you can feel a touch. It only works for the written word, though. I stared at her feet for a good five minutes, and she never jerked those away. After our fight, she’d removed her sneakers, and I saw that her toenails were painted white, and that each one was perfectly sculpted.
Eighteen across: “Not impressed.”
A cheap alternative?
I'm sure you already know about it, but apparently JVC is releasing Hard-disk based video cameras now...thought they might be a cheap alternative for "extra" shooting...
This crab is both male and female
For serious. The best part of the article is when scientists armed with PhDs speculate as to whether it could mate with itself.
This is the part of the month where we play board games
Since Tuesday fizzled out in a smoky haze of poorly-formed excuses and crappy filmography, let's get together tonight and play Munchkin. You know, that game Fishel ranted at me for not being prescient enough to know he wanted to play it in line at Star Wars. I perused the instructions and it looks like it's the ideal game for young men who are just slightly too cool to play Dungeons + Dragons in their parents' basement and have upgraded to playing Star Wars on their dining room table.

a short scene, starring chris, mark and andrew, immediately followed by a relavent moral.
chris: guys, we need to get some new d.v. tape. i don't have any clean ones we can tape over.
andrew (to mark): man, remember that tape we used before?
chris (questioningly): what tape?
mark: ho, shit, that was funny.
chris: huh?
mark: one of the tapes you used, there was all this footage on it at the very end of you in some cossack hat playing risk.
(pause).
chris: axis and allies.
mark: yeah! axis and allies. fuck, that was funny.
chris: i thought i had blanked that tape.
MORAL: we should play axis and allies this weekend.

This software will make my computer explode...
Check it out...from those great guys that brought you the "don't priate movies" ads at the beginning of movies you have paid for and gone to the theater to see, comes software that scans your computer for "P2P programs, music and video files, and other potential copyright violations". They call it PARENT SCAN. Fucking Parent Scan. I like that it doesn't bother to look for any kind of licensing, it just looks for *.mp3, *.wma, *.wmv, *.avi, etc, and reports them back to the "parent" as copyright violations. I heart the RIAA, the MPAA, the *.AA, etc.
Addendum: It found 620 files, on my work computer. It would probably make my home computer fucking explode.

Amuse Me
With whatever lame excuses you have for not participating in blowing away your friends this evening. Perhaps you are tired. Or maybe your flaccid penis is unable to stand up against your respective women's cries for attention. Or maybe you are still nursing your wounded pride from Saturday and are too cowardly to face battle again, either real or virtual.
Or maybe you'll surprise me and not have any excuses.

Missing Dr Who Dalek found on Tor
A Dalek stolen from a Somerset tourist site has been found on Glastonbury Tor after thieves said it was "too hot".
The prop, which was at Wookey Hole Caves, near Wells, for a Doctor Who exhibition, was taken more than a week ago. A "ransom note" was then issued.
Cave owner Gerry Cottle made appeals for information. In the early hours of Tuesday, staff recieved a phone call telling them where the Dalek was.
Mr Cottle has denied that the theft of the Dalek was a publicity stunt.
Last Thursday, staff found a Dalek plunger arm and a ransom note on a doorstep.
The note read: "We are holding the Dalek captive. We demand further instructions from the Doctor."
But in Tuesday's phone call, the thieves said it had become "too hot to handle" and had been placed on Glastonbury Tor.
The Dalek had been on display at the Bath and West Show and was in temporary storage at the Wookey Hole site when it was taken.

View n' Crepe
This Sunday afternoon, I will be heading to the glorious Charles Theater to view Hayao Miyazaki's new film Howl's Moving Castle.
After the movie, I will be stuffing my face with crepes. You should all join me for both parts.

Ugh. Fucking shows.
After last Friday's disappointingly sterile experience with Rams Head Live, Sonar can only seem better by comparison.
Anyway, the Futureheads are playing tonight, and I intend to be there.
Honestly, it can't really be worse, can it?

netflix night, pt. 2...
or, 'jesus fucking christ return napoleon dynamite already.'
this whole 'n.flix friends' thing is bizarre. part of me is happy that my friends take recommendations from me, that 'fishing with john' and 'the 5 obstructions' are on haddock's queue. part of me is distraught that he's had 'napoleon dynamite' for so many days. he can't be re-watching it, can he? is he going to sing the songs and quote the quotes the next time i see him? i have more access to y'all's private entertainment lives now than i ever had before. i've studied your queues, taken your quizzes, waited for new recommendations. i've over-taken lindsay in number of movies rated. i dream of a giant circle, little purple men next to every movie.
why won't fishel respond to my invitation?

Hated Only One!
Correct Answer! Jeff hated 'Gosford Park' and rated it 2 stars. We here at Netflix know that you sincerely hoped the correct answer was 'The Italian Job,' but your knowledge of your friends clearly outstrips your faith in humanity.

pod racing.
so, after months, i finally found a program that allows me to rip songs off my ipod as mp3, and add them to an itunes library on a different computer. the search was long and difficult and i have no desire to do it again.
m.r. sutter alluded to a program that allows you to rip mp3 over a network (at work, i can view and listen to several people's libraries, provided they are online and have ok'ed sharing). does this sound vaguely familiar or possible to anyone?

Proud to be intending to be a Canadian.
While searching for a film organizations in Nova Scotia, I stumbled on this.
Aparently, that's news in Canada. Good Christ, do I want out of this town.
