whippersnapper indeed

what the hell does this mean?
And while bringing protection once meant a purse full of mad money, seniors must now be aware of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
is this some usage of "mad money" I am unfamiliar with.... and what is this doing in the Baltimore Sun?

also, something to look forward to:
"Some men who have never been players, in their 70s, in a retirement home, can become players," said Wayne Nelson, a Towson University gerontology professor. "They're a hot commodity."

Fateful words

Materazzi said that when Zidane offered to give him his France jersey after the final whistle, in response persistent shirt-tugging by the Italian, he had replied: "I would prefer your sister."

...

The Italy defender said that while he had told FIFA he was willing to make a gesture of reconciliation with Zidane, he was not going to apologize.

"He has not apologized to me and I certainly don't have to apologize to him.

" If anything, I owe apologies to his sister, although I swear, before all this mess I didn't even know Zidane had a sister," he said.

YOUR INHERITANCE FUNDS OF $15.5M

My dearest Mavcici:

I should start by saying that I am a great admirer of your country's president: a soldier-democrat in the finest sense. Obasanjo's exploits are legion: his commitment to democratic reforms and his campaign against corruption have impressed me greatly. Additionally, you should know that I am the sworn enemy of Abacha and did not grieve that pill-popping meglomaniac's death for an instant.

It is for these reasons that your comminque intriques me so greatly. Indeed, I often feel that a piece of my heart beats as would an apala talking drum! Your great president wishes to follow the rule of law and return this money, a gracious gesture for which he should be congratulated heartily.

Please contact me immediately with the next step I must take to gain posession of this money. Trust me when I say that ever dime will be used to better the lives of individual Nigerians like you, Mavici!

Yours gratefully,

Jerkstore 2k4 1k: Year One: A Retrospective

  • 10 May 2004: Feezer makes the first post to the Jerkstore, signing his name in a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters that continues to baffle historians.
  • 11 May 2004: CH makes his first post, a meandering soliloquy on the evils of: the Bush administration, the Interweb, and perhaps: Bill Clinton. First posts follow from Klemis and Haddock.
  • 12 May 2004: first girl post as well as first Fishel post.
  • 20 May 2004: first Toothpaste for Dinner post.
  • 21 May 2004: first war crimes perpetuated by the U.S. post.
  • 27 May 2004: first Star Wars post.
  • 19 June 2004: CH announes he needs some help smashing up a piano.
  • 24 June 2004: AFCINS seizes control of the Jerkstore in an overnight coup d'etat and paints the blog red. Opinion on the street is mixed.
  • 29 June 2004: Feezer, appealing pitifully to Blogger admins, regains control of the blog.
  • 16 August 2004: Haddock declares Jerkstore dead.
  • 9 September 2004: CH rips the hell out of Garden State in a pair of masterful posts.
  • 10 November 2004: Bush's re-election passes by nearly un-noted.
  • 13 January 2005: the conversion of WHFS to El Zol passes by nearly un-noted.
  • 14 February 2005: Feezer visits New York City for the first time in his life, continues to oddly capitalize his name.
  • 21 February 2005: Hunter Thompson's suicide, oddly enough, doesn't pass by un-noted.
  • 31 March 2005: Feezer proudly announces he's moving to Baltimore. Harring shoots back: "you gonna get eaten alive."
  • 29 April 2005: Klemis and Haddock go to see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, stills of which had been posted on the second day of the blog.
  • 5 May 2005: first Corey post.
  • 16 May 2005: the Star Wars series culminates in a 40 hour orgy of nerdery.

1K.

So this is it. The 1,000th post. I know some of you want something brilliant and insightful, but i never really thought that was the style of The Jerk Store. So, in lieu of that, I offer up the most "in spirit" comment i can think of:

Seriously, you're all fags.

To commemorate the occasion, here's a picture of Purple Tentacle playing Playstation.

Now that that's out of the way, feel free to post your "Jerk Store memories" in the ensuing posts.

Seriously? Seriously.

On September 11th, to "celebrate" the fifth anniversary of 9/11/01, CNN will replay their coverage of the entier 9/11/01 morning, in real time.

Respectful, or completely insane and tastelss? you decide.

An average of more than 110 Iraqis were killed each day in July, according to the figures. The total number of civilian deaths that month, 3,438, is a 9 percent increase over the tally in June and nearly double the toll in January.

Crossing Over

Some of them are obvious. Some of them are obvious marketing. Some of them just make you wonder...

They're random comic crossovers.

remember j.t.'s goodly image when we were younger? a chilly fall rain of heartbreak and true romance? it was pretty fucking terrible. luckily, we all grow up and decide it is cool to say 'motherfucker' in pop songs, have timbaland and rick reuben produce our albums, make super-slick videos with guns, explosions and sexy girls, get paid, and know we are awesome.

Superman, 1940

Conventional Supermanic History tells us that Kryptonite, Superman's one major weakness—a piece of mineral from his home planet—was created fully formed from the writers of the Superman Radio Show in 1943 and first appeared in the Superman comic books in 1949. It tells us that Superman never learned that he came from an alien planet—nor that said planet was named "Krypton"—until 1949. And it also tells us that Lois Lane never learned that Superman and Clark Kent are one-and-the-same until sometime in the 1990s.

If Jerry Siegel had his way, all of these events, and more, would have occurred in 1940—but "The K-Metal from Krypton" was never published.

What I was really trying to say.

An entertaining exchange I had the wherewithal to record.

RACE TO 1K

Oh, how the summer distracts. Meanwhile, the Jerkstore pushes ever closer to the 1K mark. Personally, I don't want Klimis to take the accolades for himself.

What the DoD Didn't Mention

Stealing content is wrong

But hey... it makes for fascinating reading. From Stratfor:
From an international standpoint, the Israelis expect to be condemned. These international condemnations, however, are now having the opposite effect of what is intended. The Israeli view is that they will be condemned regardless of what they do. The differential between the condemnation of reprisal attacks and condemnation of a full invasion is not enough to deter more extreme action. If Israel is going to be attacked anyway, it might as well achieve its goals.

Moreover, an invasion of Hezbollah-held territory aligns Israel with the United States. U.S. intelligence has been extremely concerned about the growing activity of Hezbollah, and U.S. relations with Iran are not good. Lebanon is the center of gravity of Hezbollah, and the destruction of Hezbollah capabilities in Lebanon, particularly the command structure, would cripple Hezbollah operations globally in the near future. The United States would very much like to see that happen, but cannot do it itself. Moreover, an Israeli action would enrage the Islamic world, but it would also drive home the limits of Iranian power. Once again, Iran would have dropped Lebanon in the grease, and not been hurt itself. The lesson of Hezbollah would not be lost on the Iraqi Shia -- or so the Bush administration would hope.

Therefore, this is one Israeli action that benefits the United States, and thus helps the immediate situation as well as long-term geopolitical alignments. It realigns the United States and Israel. This also argues that any invasion must be devastating to Hezbollah. It must go deep. It must occupy temporarily. It must shatter Hezbollah.
The whole thing can be read here -- scroll down.

Speaking of stealing, you've probably seen this already:
"What the irony is, they need to get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit, and it's over."

This one's for you, Zargon

[Researchers] studied 40 volunteers who used a driving simulator four times--while undistracted, using a handheld cell phone, using a hands-free cell phone and while intoxicated to a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level--the average legal level of impairment in the United States--after drinking vodka and orange juice.

Three study participants rear-ended the simulated car in front of them. All were talking on cell phones and none was drunk, the researchers said.

Motorists who talked on either handheld or hands-free cell phones drove slightly more slowly, were 9 percent slower to hit the brakes, and varied their speed more than undistracted drivers.
Discussion question: who drinks screwdrivers anymore?

Subtle Dig, Slowly Cracking

Clearly, the liberal media is straining under the pressure of trying to appear anything but for the last six years.

From CNN's website in a story about the overwhelming scientific consensus on Global Warming. Note the phraseology in the link to the associated video clip:

"The Bush administration has maintained that the threat is not severe enough to warrant new pollution controls that the White House says would have cost 5 million Americans their jobs. (Watch as lawmakers argue saving the planet could ruin our economy-- 2:24)"

I don't know about you, but I hear sarcasm and spite splatter on the floor as they drip and ooze off that turn of phrase.

As one jerk to another

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s decision on whether to veto the General Assembly's BGE rate-deferral plan isn't due until midnight tonight, but he has given strong signals that he will reject the legislation and attempt to push a bill of his own.

The Democrats who run the legislature tried during last week's special session to bring an end to the issue that has dominated Maryland's political scene for months. But the governor indicated yesterday that he would like to keep the debate alive, and he said consumers are on his side.

It's like that one X-Files episode only real

WN: What sort of evidence?

McKinnon: A NASA photographic expert said that there was a Building 8 at Johnson Space Center where they regularly airbrushed out images of UFOs from the high-resolution satellite imaging. I logged on to NASA and was able to access this department. They had huge, high-resolution images stored in their picture files. They had filtered and unfiltered, or processed and unprocessed, files.

My dialup 56K connection was very slow trying to download one of these picture files. As this was happening, I had remote control of their desktop, and by adjusting it to 4-bit color and low screen resolution, I was able to briefly see one of these pictures. It was a silvery, cigar-shaped object with geodesic spheres on either side. There were no visible seams or riveting. There was no reference to the size of the object and the picture was taken presumably by a satellite looking down on it. The object didn't look manmade or anything like what we have created. Because I was using a Java application, I could only get a screenshot of the picture -- it did not go into my temporary internet files. At my crowning moment, someone at NASA discovered what I was doing and I was disconnected.

I also got access to Excel spreadsheets. One was titled "Non-Terrestrial Officers." It contained names and ranks of U.S. Air Force personnel who are not registered anywhere else. It also contained information about ship-to-ship transfers, but I've never seen the names of these ships noted anywhere else.

... well, the guy's actually up for extradition, anyway.

Al-Qaeda terrorists came within 45 days of attacking the New York subway system with a lethal gas similar to that used in Nazi death camps. They were stopped not by any intelligence breakthrough, but by an order from Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman Zawahiri.

Arrrrre you rrrrrready to rrrrrrrumble?

Are you an in-shape male weighing between 64 and 86 kilograms and hate the films of controversial German director Uwe Boll? If so, he wants to fight you in Vancouver as part of one of his films...

"On the message boards, you have, like, tons of people, they want to punish me kill me, grill me, shoot me, everything. The Internet threats are so full of hate in a lot of times that I think it goes way over the top of normal reviews and normal talk about a director."

The top five critics who sign up to fight him will be flown to Vancouver and will be extras in Postal... Five, 10-round fights will be staged over the last two days of filming and scenes from the matches will become part of the film, Boll said... To be eligible, critics must have written at least two negative articles about Boll in 2005.

I really thought we were the only ones who did this.

From an article on the D+D website about dice habits:

'The most extreme dice superstition I’ve seen was something called "prepping the dice". This ritual was preformed before making an important d20 roll, like against a save-or-die spell. It involved the individual taking as many d20 as they owned, 8 to 12 dice, and rolling them over and over, eliminating all the high rolling dice. The theory being that if you had a die that had just consistently rolled low, it was now due to roll high and could be used for the official roll. '

I'm honestly surprised that other people in the world are as nuts about this shit as we are. And by 'nuts' I mean 'fucking crazy'.

A US state is to enlist web users in its fight against illegal immigration by offering live surveillance footage of the Mexican border on the internet.

The plan will allow web users worldwide to watch Texas' border with Mexico and phone the authorities if they spot any apparently illegal crossings.
This doesn't have a date attached to it, but I'm guessing 2001-2:

In the his Mars trilogy, Kim Robinson predicts that the poor nations of the world will move from harboring major corporations to effectively becoming branches of 'transnat' corporations as their local laws are eroded, and then restructured to suit their wealthiest 'citizens'.

Today, it's finally happening. Sort of.

Man I'm glad I'm not 16 anymore

Amid rumors that warn of "Columbine-like violence" at a Carroll County high school June 6 -- a date being linked to satanic references because it translates to 666 -- officials are trying to allay growing concerns among parents, students and staff at Liberty High School in Eldersburg...

To help ease fears, school officials are planning to increase police presence -- especially on that day and the night before -- and students are being prohibited from wearing trench coats to school...

Carroll school officials also are warning parents about rumors lingering on Web sites, such as myspace.com, that suggest danger on that date -- 6/6/6 -- because of the link of those digits to biblical prophecies about the Antichrist.

what happens to "the online you" when "the real you" dies?

your friends and fellow clanmembers organize a funeral. they post about it on boards and meet in a giant, snowy (and virtual) field. creatures of all races attend, and organize themselves into a giant line to pay their respects.

however, a rival clan reads the board. they know when and where the funeral will take place. since sincerety no longer factors into the way people think about things, they organize a massive assault force that tears through the hills and woods toward the remote location where the funeral is being held.

they explode into the clearing and horrifically slaughter all the attendees in a matter of moments. they camp and continue to destroy the attendees. you are dead, but the community of dickheads to which you once belonged lives on.

at least it is documented.

Dear sirs

On a twenty-sided die, the odds of rolling a 19-20, then a 19-20 again, and finally a 18-20 are:

1 in 666.6
(that is, 2/20 * 2/20 * 3/20)

This is a little more probable than getting dealt a full house in poker. The implications of this are left as an exercise for the reader.

You can't sacrifice on fuel, and you couldn't stand to live with other people, so you slash your food budget -- no more organics, and more white sugar and white flour. Guy goes to town meeting, guy tells bush he should be ashamed of himself. Bush's response? "I'm not your favorite guy, i get it".

Let's get this impeachment started

President Bush authorized White House official I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby to disclose highly sensitive intelligence information to the news media in an attempt to discredit a CIA adviser whose views undermined the rationale for the invasion of Iraq, according to a federal prosecutor's account of Libby's testimony to a grand jury.

I'm out of control.

This is adorable, though.

Why?

Because they are awesome.

According to the British, "Jew" is more offensive than "Crap"...

I was shown a ranked list of rudeness. It was every bit as entertaining as I had hoped, but to my disappointment, there was no possibility of removing this fabulous document from the room. I don’t like to paint too much of a melodramatic picture, but the offending piece of paper was physically removed from my hand (I think they had the idea that I would scan it, post it on my blog, and write an article about it).

Scandal!

Amid a growing national controversy about the gesture U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made Sunday at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the freelance photographer who captured the moment has come forward with the picture.

Gilles Trehin is an autistic 28-year-old. Since the age of 12, he has been designing an imaginary city called Urville, named after the “Dumont d’Urville,” a French scientific base in Antarctica. His Guidebook to Urville will be published later this year.

Ichiro: 'The Best Part About Playing For My Country Was Not Playing For The Seattle Mariners'

March 23, 2006 | Onion Sports

SAN DIEGO—In an interview following Japan's 10-6 victory against Cuba in the World Baseball Classic championship game Monday, Ichiro Suzuki called the tournament a "great opportunity to represent anything besides the Seattle Mariners." "Playing alongside my countrymen on the world stage was nice, but the highlight of the event for me was not having to watch helplessly from the on-deck circle as [Seattle outfielder] Willie Bloomquist pops out for the fourth time in one game," said Ichiro, who has been contemplating a return to his non-Mariner roots since late 2003. "Honestly, I would have played for the Netherlands team if it meant 17 days away from the Mariners spring-training camp." Although he said that the legendary Sadaharu Oh did a fine job coaching Team Japan, Ichiro added that "next to Mike Hargrove, any idiot in a baseball cap would seem like a decent manager."

Any idea what it says on the right there, zargon?

Somebody please help me... I actually find Revolution rumors interesting.
